Hezekiah

   1) (fl. 8th-7th cent BCE)
Bang of Judah (715-687 BCE). Unlike his father Ahaz, he attempted to free Judah from Assyrian influence. He removed pagan images and altars from the Temple and renewed the religion of ancient Israel. These reforms were supported by Isaiah. When Hezekiah led a league of states against Assyria, Sennacherib invaded Judah, but did not occupy Jerusalem. As a consequence, Hezekiah was forced to pay tribute to the Assyrians.
   2) (d. c.1058)
Babylonian exilarch and gaon. He served as exilarch from 1021. When Hai Gaon died in 1038 Hezekiah succeeded him as gaon and head of the academy at Pumbedita.
